President Mike with SVP Peter and JVP Bill ready to guide us through Rotary Year 2008—2009 |
||
|
Scarecrows appeared around the town and in gardens of the residential areas during the Well-Dressing week. Not to be left out, our ubiquitous President Mel (now IPP) was at the Hope and Anchor, reminding us that he was once a beat copper on a bike. |
||
| After over a week's preparation the 2008 Well-Dressing was erected in the Market Place on Saturday 24th May and remained on display until the following Saturday. | ||
| The theme for our Well-Dressing this year was '60 Years of Rotary in Wirksworth'. Mollie and Sue are shown starting work on the centre panel that has been pricked out and lined. | ||
|
This noble band took part in the walk from the home of Ken and Margrette Wilkins to the The Shoulder of Mutton at Osmaston, where they dined. on the evening of 13th May. The photo was taken in Ken and Margrettes’s garden |
||
| 149 Rotarians, visitors and guests
attended our Charter from 25 Clubs, 26 if Wirksworth is included. As
the evening progressed President Mel was able to relax and
enjoy an excellent evening, exchanging greetings with the representatives
of the 25 other Clubs and the Matlock Round Table. Mel’s Speaker, stand-up comic John Evans, was very humorous, had everyone laughing and gave an excellent performance without any bad language or ‘smut’. A model that many would do well to copy. There were laughing faces all round the room. |
||
| On 8th April 2008 a group went to the Rolls Royce Heritage Trust at Sinfin on a vocational visit organised by Rotarian Rob Sherlock. They were all impressed to see the huge display of aircraft engines from the early days to the present together with easy to read explanations along with the technical data. It was a visit that was enjoyed by all. | ||

The
winner of the first Anthony Gell School Speaking
Competition (year 7 to year 9) received her Winner’s Certificate and £50 prize money
from President Mel on Thursday 28th
February when she and her family were guests of the Club, which sponsors
the competition. Club members heard a repeat of the winning talk in which she outlined the trials and benefits of her hobby – looking after her horse. This she did with a lively and descriptive ability that put the intended imagery into the minds of her audience, and she did it with a good measure of humour. Her talk was greatly appreciated. The speaking competition continues for year 10 & 11 students and 6th Form students, the prizes being £75 and £100 respectively. Finals are scheduled for 21st May.

| In December 2007 we held our first Santa Run around part of Carsington Water. There was a good turn-out and fun was had by one and all. | ||
| At the Christmas
Dinner Chris Bunting was awarded a Paul Harris
Fellowship, with the Club's
Paul Harris Fellows looking on. |
